JUN 29, 2012 NICE: FACELIFT FOR THE PROMENADES DES ANGLAIS

As the sun beamed down on the capital of the Riviera, Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi unveiled his new plans to renovate the historic Promenade des Anglais and restore the walkway to its former glory as a focalpoint of the city. Palm trees and pontoons are just some of the new additions that will enhance the seaside avenue from the Quai des Etats Unis to Ferber, and work could begin as early as next year.

JUN 22, 2012 NEW CAMERAS CLOCK AVERAGE SPEED

SPEED cameras that measure average speed over several kilometres are being installed from today.Unlike traditional cameras, that “flash” motorists who are speeding, the so-called radars-tronçon monitor average speed and then take a photo of offending vehicles, using infra-red technology. Stretches concerned will be preceded by informational signs flashing up your speed.

JUN 18, 2012 TAKE A DEEP BREATH

Drivers heading to or through France this summer should note the new requirement to carry a breathalyser kit in their vehicles from 1 July 2012.The legislation means that everybody driving on French roads should be able to produce an unused self test kit, marked with the French ‘NF’ certification standard.The general advice is to carry two kits so if one is used, having a spare keeps you on the right side of the law. The fine for not having a kit is €11 although French police are expected to operate a grace period, until November, when no penalties will be issued.Another important point to bear in mind when driving in France is that the drink-driving limit is 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, much lower than the UK’s 80mg.

SIX Burgundy wine bosses have been questioned over suspicion of fraud involving the mixing and labelling of wines.Leaders of one of the main Burgundy wine merchants, Labouré-Roi, were questioned in police custody after investigators found possible evidence of banned practices.

JUN 08, 2012 LOW COST TRAIL TRAVEL

NATIONAL train company SNCF is taking a leaf out of the low-cost airline's book and is set to offer budget TGV travel next year.Radio station RTL reported on Monday that the rail firm will offer a ticket for under €25 to destinations including Lyon, Marseille and Montpellier. However services will not start in the centre of Paris, but in Marne-la-Vallée, a town east of the capital, in Seine-et-Marne.

JUN 08, 2012 NO LONGER A LOAD OF BULL

Anti-bullfighting campaigners are preparing a mass letter campaign to the Elysée next week to call for the abolition of the "corrida" in France and for it to be removed from the list of country's cultural heritage.Protesters have asked people to send red envelopes with their appeals for the end of bullfighting to the president on June 11.
